Salix Acutifolia - Acutifolia is a very special basketry willow that is also great for living structures and landscape features, as a single plant will produce both fine whips and large, substantial rods. Wine-to-purple in color, it produces the white bloom common to acutifolia varieties, that gives it a frosty appearance. This unique coloring makes it beautiful for basketry accents, and breath-taking as a living willow alley in the landscape. Acutifolia differs from ‘Blue Streak’ which is another acutifolia variety, in that it does not produce noticeable catkins.
The acutifolias are not prolific producers, and can look downright scrawny in early years. However, they more than make up for that in their beautiful, unique appearance. If you have a small space and want a special willow that won’t grow overly full, Acutifolia is for you! If you have lots of room to grow, and can afford to give up some space to grow eye candy, Acutifolia is also for you! Double-planting Acutifolia cuttings isn’t a bad idea, to grow a fuller plant in the same space.
