Stakes and Rods for Special Projects
What is the difference between cuttings, stakes, & rods?
Cuttings
Cuttings are 14” long and are used for growing willow coppices for harvesting material, or, in general gardening terms, “shrubs.” They will grow rods in all directions, from ground level, and thus are not good for planting to weave woven willow structures. They will work for planting a hedge, under controlled conditions.
Stakes
Stakes are 3’ long and are good for erosion control projects, and for planting hedges in areas that are not able to be irrigated and maintained as well as would be done in more cultivated spots.
Rods
Rods are 6’-8’ long if shipped, and may be longer if delivered locally. Rods should be used to plant woven willow fences, tunnels, arches, and for building willow huts, as they will provide clean lines for the design, and the majority of growth towards the top.
Why Plant Stakes or Rods?
When planting in areas that aren’t easily accessible to irrigation, or that may have more weed and grass competition than in cultivated areas, longer stakes give your willow planting a better chance to survive and thrive. Stakes are also preferable for erosion control projects, as there’s more area available for the early root growth that will give stability to the stream bank.
When planting a woven living willow structure, such as a fence, tunnel, arch, or hut, longer rods are needed to avoid branching at ground level. Planting short cuttings will result in a hedge, rather than a tidy, weaveable fence.
